How long have you been practicing your trade?
10 years, but I’ve been hanging sheetrock and building things since I was little thanks to my Dad. Anytime I was late for curfew, I would have a project in the morning.
What is your definition of a Perfectly Strong Woman?
My definition of a strong woman is someone who fights against expectations. She is aware of the obstacles and expectations in her way and she decides for herself how to achieve it. As a face on TV, I feel a lot of pressure and expectations from the world, but it helps to take a step back and realize that I am imperfectly me.
Tell us more about your business.
I started Growing Days back in 2008 when the recession hit. My Husband Bill and I just bought our forever home and we needed furniture to fill it. I began going to vintage stores and found unique furniture that had beautiful potential to be restored. Then, before I knew it, my phone was ringing and people wanted to interview me about the furniture and buy it (WHAT!?!). I started Growing Days because I had 3 babies and one on the way so it only made sense that I was (and still am) growing Days. Now, my Dad and I star on a DIY Network show called Bargain Mansions. With season 2 airing in the fall, it’s kept us very busy!
What is one piece of advice that you would give a young woman aspiring to fulfill her dream?
Keep on pushing through to get to your dream, and block out the people that don’t believe in you. Surround yourself with positive people who want you to fulfill your dreams! If you would’ve told me that I would be on TV someday when I was a young woman, I would have laughed out loud!
Name the one woman who has been most influential in pursuing your dream/craft.
I am a lucky woman to be surrounded by so many strong women. My mother, sister, and sister in law have been with me every step of the way. Being in my trade can be a stressful mess sometimes and my family knows when I need a day off to relax with the girls. They have supported me from day one and I love them for that!
As a busy woman, what is a time-saving technique or life hack that you would share?
I always take my phone calls on speakerphone hands free when I’m driving in the car. No, I’m not recommending that you use your phone while driving, ha! But, it is a huge hack to get things done when I’m stationed in a spot for a long time.
What is your guilty pleasure?
I LOVE ice cream. My friends make fun of me because I am always cold (I use my space heater and wear winter coats in the summer), but I cannot get enough ice cream.
What are some skin care/beauty tips that you would like to share that will help a woman look her best and feel confident?
Wash your face with hot water and a hot washcloth every night. The best exfoliator is a hot washcloth. And Moisturize moisturize moisturize! My favorite night time oil is Luna by Sunday Riley. Kate Somerville Exfolikate.
